PMAWHS214 Underwater helicopter safety and escape (HUET)

Thousands of professionals from all over the world with backgrounds in aviation, marine, defence and emergency service industries graduate every year with a LifeFlight HUET accreditation.

About HUET:

  • Participants will develop hands-on experience and confidence using the latest technology in submerged helicopter simulators, and learn essential post-accident water survival techniques including life jacket and life raft training.
  • The training focuses on both rotary (helicopter) and fixed wing (jet) aircraft and is specifically designed to heighten safety procedures, danger awareness and operational standards for flights over or near water. HUET has been shown to significantly increase post-accident underwater survival.
  • The locations of domestic courses include Brisbane, Melbourne, Cairns, Townsville and Mackay. Other locations are available on a quote basis.
  • This course is extremely beneficial for anyone who is involved in the aviation industry, particularly for those who will be flying over or near water. This course is necessary training for air crew, marine pilots, firefighters and aviation medical professionals. Graduates receive a Statement of Attainment for unit PMAWHS214 upon successful completion.

What's covered?

  • Sea Survival Techniques – includes cold water survival, swimming techniques, HELP and HUDDLE positions, maximizing survival time, flotation and group survival techniques.
  • Search and Rescue Procedures – includes techniques to minimise your rescue time including effective use of signalling equipment such as GPS systems, EPIRBS, flares and marker dyes. Helicopter and vessel search and recovery procedures.
  • Medical Safety – includes prevention and treatment of hypothermia, hydration and dehydration considerations, along with general survivor well-being.

Assessment

This assessment will be conducted through observing skills in making a competent underwater escape from the aircraft simulator in a variety of escape situations. These escape situations will include 180-degree rollover, 180-degree rollover in blackout conditions and 180-degree rollover using a secondary exit.

Knowledge of the theoretical components of the course will be assessed through the use of a written questionnaire. Both assessments will be conducted at the end of each component of training. Notification of results will be given at the completion of the day’s training.

Who should participate?

This course is necessary training for aircrew, marine pilots, fire industry, government personnel, media representatives, tourism operators, aviation medical professionals and any person whose job role requires them to fly over water in either a rotary wing or fixed wing aircraft.

Refresher Course Option

The HUET Written Assessment will be provided prior to the commencement of the course. This will be marked by an assessor before organising attendance for the practical component of the course.

If the student is not successful in completing the knowledge component of the course, they will be advised to attend the full course. LifeFlight Training Academy recommend completing the theory training every second HUET enrolment to best utilise the skills and knowledge contained in this course.
