Rescue chopper airlifts man after quad bike crash

The Sunshine Coast-based LifeFlight helicopter crew has airlifted an elderly man to hospital, after he was injured in a quad bike crash this afternoon.

It’s believed the man, aged in his seventies, had been riding the vehicle on a rural property, northeast of Gympie, when the crash occurred.

The rescue chopper flew to the scene, and landed nearby, just after 3:30pm (Sunday 22nd Jan).

Due to the hilly terrain, local Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics treated the patient for several injuries before transporting him to the helicopter.

The RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Critical Care Doctor and QAS Flight Paramedic stabilised the man and he was flown to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

The Land Rover LifeFlight Special Mission Helicopter performed this mission. The aircraft is part of LifeFlight Australia’s commercial operation, which supports the work of the community helicopter fleet, through our profit-for-purpose model.

It is currently based at the Sunshine Coast and is rotated through our community bases from time to time, when operationally required.

The incident was the third crash LifeFlight crews attended over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Brisbane-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue chopper airlifted a woman, aged in her 50s, after the motorcycle she was a passenger on crashed in the South Burnett region.

She was flown to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a stable condition.

The Bundaberg-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter crew also airlifted a man to hospital on Saturday, after he was injured in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crash.

It’s believed the man, aged in his forties, had been driving around a popular Gladstone region motorcycle park when he lost control of the ATV, causing it to roll.

He was flown to Bundaberg Hospital in a stable condition.
