RACQ LifeFlight Rescue airlifts woman who spent three nights lost at Fraser Island

The Bundaberg-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter has airlifted a woman to hospital, after she was stranded in bushland, at Fraser Island, for three nights.

The aeroemedical crew was called at 8am today (September 20th) to be made aware that the woman had been found, after stumbling across a group of campers, and would require an airlift to hospital.

The woman explained to rescuers, that she had been walking behind the group she was hiking with and took a detour, around a large tree which had fallen across the track.

She believed she had continued on the correct path, but realised approximately 30 minutes later that she was lost.

The hiker then made her way to higher ground, to find phone reception, where she then attempted to send a text message, saying she would continue to head east.

After spending three nights in the bush, the woman came across a group of campers, who immediately called the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

QPS then drove to the campsite, to pick the woman up, and take her back to the local station.

The aeromedical team then met the hiker at the station, where the Queensland Ambulance Critical Care Flight Paramedic accessed the woman.

She was then airlifted to Hervey Bay Hospital in a stable condition, for observation.

The search for the woman, aged in her seventies, started Thursday (17th September) afternoon.

RACQ LifeFlight Rescue was tasked by the Queensland Police Service (QPS) on Thursday evening to search for the woman, and again on Friday.
