Seriously injured man airlifted after multi-vehicle crash

The Sunshine Coast LifeFlight helicopter crew has flown a seriously injured man to hospital after a multi-vehicle crash involving three cars and a truck, north of Gympie over the weekend.

The rescue chopper was called into action just after 5.30pm (Fri, February 24).

It’s believed the crash caused the man’s car to run off the road and down an embankment.

As a result of the vehicle’s extensive damage, the man was trapped for a period of time, before being freed by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) personnel.

The pilot was able to land the aircraft on the highway, which had been closed by Queensland Police Service (QPS) officers.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics were also on scene when the aeromedical team arrived.

The RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Critical Care Doctor and Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Flight Paramedic assisted local QAS paramedics in treating the man for head, chest and multiple limb injuries.

The man, aged in his 20s, was flown to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a serious condition.

Another patient was transported by the Queensland Government Air (QGAir) rescue helicopter to Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The Land Rover LifeFlight Special Mission Helicopter performed this mission. The aircraft is part of LifeFlight Australia’s commercial operation, which supports the work of the community helicopter fleet, through our profit-for-purpose model.

It is currently based at the Sunshine Coast and is rotated through our community bases from time to time, when operationally required.
