The Mount Isa RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter crew have come to the aid of five people, who had been stranded in a flooded area of North West Queensland, since their vehicle broke down on Saturday afternoon.
It’s believed the group had been travelling from Mount Isa to Lake Nash.
The rescue aircraft was tasked by Queensland Police Service (QPS) at 2pm today (Monday 26th December), to search for the people, who had been reported missing after they didn’t arrive at their destination when expected.
The crew searched along a road, before locating the first of the five people, who had set out to Lake Nash to get help.
The woman had walked around 35 kilometres on waterlogged dirt roads and couldn’t go any further, due to floodwaters.
The crew brought her on board the helicopter and she was able to direct them to where she thought the rest of the group were waiting with the broken down vehicle.
The pilot started flying in that direction and spotted them only about five minutes later.
It’s believed they had also decided to walk towards Lake Nash, and they were found near an unrelated, abandoned vehicle, which was bogged on a road, surrounded by floodwater.
The pilot was able to quickly land the helicopter on the road, to collect them.
All five people were transported to safety in Lake Nash.
